Beautiful Provence Region

Another well known natural park is Carmargue , famous for wetlands, bulls & white horses. The mountains of St Victoire(resting place of Picasso)and Ventoux (part of the Tour de France cycling route),also lie within protected areas.

Stylish Mediterranean seaside resorts come alive during the summer months. Nice, Cannes, and Saint Tropez, are amoung  the most famous, with festivals, shopping and visiting super yachts adding to the glitz.

Cities, Towns and Villages in Provence

In northern Provence, at the foot of the Alpilles, the old Gallo-Roman village of St. Rémy is picturesque with renaissance buildings, convents and chapels. Traditional sheep migrating festivals, bull fights, horse fairs, concerts and exhibitions add to the atmosphere.

Aix-en-Provence, the historical capital of Provence, is a stunningly beautiful university town with a long association through history with royalty and nobility. The streets and squares of the old town are full of sights, that are best seen on foot.

One of the 'most beautiful villages of France', is Seguret in the cotes du Rhone wine region. Seguret old town is entered by a cobbled street under an old stone archway, the Porte Reynier. Sited along narrow streets, traditional stone houses, many with ornate doorways with trees that add to the character. Wine cellars and wine tasting are also a feature of the area.

Gordes is another  ancient village, also voted one of France's most beautiful villages. White stone houses and buildings built into the mountain, offer spectacular views. Weekly markets, an almond tree festival and a village fete are some of the attractions of this hilltop village

Other popular villages are centred around the the Luberon region,: Oppède-le-Vieux; nearby Ménerbes, strung out along a hilltop; Lacoste, one street town leading to the castle of the Marquis de Sade; Bonnieux, tumbling down the side of a hill. Roussillon, with the ochre mines and orange houses, that are best seen at sunrise.

Roman Ruins in Provence

Provence boasts some of the finest Roman ancient architecture, from the time the Romans were at the height of power. Amoung one of the most significant is the Pont Du Gard near Nimes, an aqueduct , built in three tiers spanning the Gardon River.
The Trophee d' Auguste in the medieval town of la Turbie is a magnificant crumbling ruin that dominates the ebtire French Riveria overlooking Monaco.
